Africa-1 Arrival

We flew from Salt Lake City to Atlanta, and then caught an overnight flight to Johannesburg South Africa. A loooong flight, 15 and a half hours. Depart at 8 PM Atlanta time, and arrive at 5.50 PM Africa time. It was dark when we landed!

We stayed in a hotel near the Airport, and we had some really nice South African Chardonnay with dinner. I hope all of our wine is this good. Tomorrow we go back to the airport to catch a small plane that will take us to Skukuza, which is near Kruger National Park, which is in the northeastern part of South Africa. We will be staying in a game camp in the Mala Mala Game Reserve. MalaMala shares a 12 mile unfenced border with Kruger National Park and lies between the National Park and the Sabi Sand Reserve. So we should see lots of animals!

Next, we will go to Victoria Falls, which wikipedia classifies as the largest in the world. Then we go to two game camps in Botswana, first in Chobe National Park, and then to the Okavango Delta, where we some of our “game drives” will be by boat.

Part of our preparation for this trip was to watch the movie Invictus, which is about South Africa’s new president Nelson Mandela and the 1995 Rugby World Cup. We also watched the The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, which takes place in Botswana, and we are currently reading some of the The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency books.

So, tomorrow we are off to see animals, and hopefully will have great pictures to share!

Check the blog, as I may not be emailing before each post.

  1. Sounds fabulous! I’m excited for and envious of you both. ;-> I told Susan that Anna and Jake are going to Kruger in July. Sorry you’ll miss each other.

Can’t wait to see your photos, which always are breathtaking.

    Enjoy!
