Arizona-5 Cave Photos

3 Comments / Camping, Travel / David

Susan and I took a trip to Tucson in Winter 2020. I had two posts on the trip, here, and here. One of the places we visited was Kartchner Caverns State Park, where we took a tour of the cave. It was a great tour, but no photographs were permitted.   When planning this trip, […]

Arizona-4 Cactus Fiesta

1 Comment / Camping, Travel / David

I visited Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, based on a strong recommendation from my friend Suzanne. The Monument is adjacent to the Mexican border. The campground was very nice, and there were nice hikes and good bike rides. Lots of quail in the campground.  I did the Arch Canyon hike.  The cacti were terrific.  There

Arizona-3 Spring Training

I had always wanted to see a spring training baseball game and when I was near Phoenix I took advantage of the opportunity. Fifteen teams play in ten stadiums in the Cactus League.  Harvest Hosts is a program that allows campers to camp overnight at wineries, farms, breweries, and museums. I found a place called

Arizona-2 Arizona State Parks

I camped in a variety of places on this trip. Sometimes I camped on BLM or Forest Service land, using the iOverlander app. When we had the travel trailer I had read online about the high quality of the campgrounds in Arizona State Parks. I also learned that reservations can be reserved a year in

Arizona-1 Red Rocks

I loved traveling with our trailer with Susan, but I sold the trailer when Susan could not travel any longer. I wanted to continue to go camping and exploring, but now solo, and I decided to get a van. I got a four-wheel drive van, suitable for going off-road on the BLM land that is

Patagonia-4 Ushuaia

We flew from El Calafate to Ushuaia, which is in Terra del Fuego, and claims the title of the southernmost city in the world.  We checked into our hotel, which was on the water on the outskirts of town. I asked whether the Tolkeyen Hotel was named after the author JRR Tolkien; I was told

Patagonia-3 El Calafate

We had a long drive from Puerto Deseado to El Calafate across the Patagonia steppe. We stopped a number of times along the route, the first being at the Jaramillo Petrified Forest. We went on a nice hike around the park.  It was a beautiful area, despite being arid and windswept. It was clearly a

Patagonia-2 Puerto Deseado

Go Learn had hired a bus for transport and contracted with a local guide Sebastian, who was an incredibly knowledgeable naturalist, who traveled with us for the next five days.  Our bus had the Go Learn logo! We drove from the Comodoro Rivadavia airport through the rugged Patagonia desert which reminded us of the west

Patagonia-1 Buenos Aires

I decided to travel with the University of Utah Continuing Education’s Go Learn travel program.  This is what it says on their web site:   They listed a trip to Patagonia. I didn’t know much about Patagonia, but it sounded exotic and beautiful.  I really enjoyed our trips to the Galapagos and Africa because of
